The In-Home Energy Evaluation program offered by Southwest Tennessee Electric and TVA provides participants with information and incentives to make smart improvements to their homes. The centerpiece of the program is a thorough on-site evaluation performed by STEMC evaluators Rob Weatherford and Jerry Prince.

Since the program began in 2009, over 120 STEMC members have had evaluations performed through the program. Once the evaluation is completed, homeowners receive a detailed report that outlines real actions that can be taken to improve energy efficiency and reduce monthly electric bills.

“There are simple actions homeowners can take to reduce energy waste and save money,” says Weatherford. “Many recommendations we make are free or very cheap to complete.”

“Cleaning air filters and caulking around windows are simple things that most all homeowners can do,” says Prince. “These simple, low-cost repairs have can have a big impact.”

Unfortunately, most homes need work beyond simple repairs, and this is where participants find real value in the program. “Many homes need significant work like new windows and doors, duct work repair, and attic insulation,” says Weatherford.

The program will rebate 50 percent of the cost of implementing recommendations, up to a maximum of $500. “If a homeowner needs $800 of insulation, we will rebate $400 of the cost,” says Prince.

The results? Since the program began, over $200,000 of recommendations have been made and 72 percent of program participants have taken steps to make their homes more efficient. Over $32,000 of incentives have been paid to STEMC members with the average homeowner receiving a check for $446.98.
