“I knew I needed to make a few improvements, but I wasn’t sure where to start,” says Jennifer Hopper of her recently purchased home on Gumwood Cove in Jackson.

Hopper chose to participate in the In-Home Energy Evaluation program offered through a partnership between Southwest Tennessee Electric and TVA. Through the program, STEMC members can reduce their power usage and receive a cash incentive or financing assistance for installing home energy improvements. When a member chooses to participate, a TVA certified evaluator will do a thorough on-site inspection of the home and make specific recommendations to help the member save energy. There is a $150 fee for the inspection, but this fee will be refunded once homeowners spend at least $150 on improvements. The evaluation may examine the following:
appliances

  • insulation
  • doors & windows
  • heating & cooling systems
  • air infiltraton
  • weatherizaton
  • lighting
  • rehabilitation & repairs

Home-owners will receive a report listing prioritized recommendations based on an estimated return of investment.

“By teaming energy experts with a package of financing options and cash incentives, the In-Home Energy Evaluation program gives home-owners the knowledge and resources to make real, lasting changes to their home and their utility costs,” says Trent Scott, vice president of marketing and energy services.

Recommended energy-related home improvements completed are eligible for reimbursement of 50 percent of the installation cost, with a limit of $500, or for convenient financing. “We are not only telling our members what to do to save energy and money, but we are also helping them pay for improvements to their home,” says Scott.
“The program is easy and gives me money to make improvements to my home,” says Hopper. “The inspector gives you a list of recommendations and qualified contractors. The process of applying for the rebate is simple.”
